Majority of Americans oppose Equality Act, poll finds

According to a new Rasmussen poll, less than a third of Americans believe that biological male athletes who identify as transgender women should be allowed to compete on women’s sports teams.

The poll, released Friday, found that 51% of the respondents think biological males who identify as trans women shouldn’t compete on female sports teams. Fifty-seven percent of African Americans also said they are opposed to the idea.

The survey found that just 29% of the 1,000 respondents questioned said they back allowing male athletes onto girls’ athletic teams, with 20% saying they are not sure.

But in a 236-173 vote in May of this year, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives approved the so-called Equality Act, which would force schools to expand women’s sports teams to include biological males who identify as transgender girls and protect “sexual orientation and gender identity” under federal anti-discrimination law.

Nearly all Democratic presidential candidates have publicly expressed support for the measure.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, a top contender for the Democratic nomination, said in early June that enforcing the Equality Act would be his top legislative priority should he wins the presidency, as reported by the Associated Press.

Biologically male athletes who identify as trans women have dominated women’s competitions, with Franklin Pierce University runner CeCe Telfer winning an NCAA women’s track and field championship in May, and June Eastwood, a cross-country runner, being named a conference female athlete of the week last month.

The Rasmussen poll showed similar results to a Morning Consult poll released last month, which found that the majority of Republicans, Democrats, and independents agreed that athletes born as males who identify as trans women have a “competitive advantage” over female athletes, according to The Daily Caller.
