Rep. Omar’s recent tweet reignites accusations of anti-Semitism

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) came under fire Saturday for her response to a news report that businessman Leon Cooperman is endorsing billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s potential presidential bid.

Background: Omar has been accused of anti-Semitism before. Earlier this year, her “It’s all about the Benjamins baby” remark and her criticism of Israel caused outrage among politicians and citizens alike. Around that time, she implied that Republicans in Congress are being paid to support Israel. She later denied being anti-Semitic and apologized for her comments.

She also came under fire last March when she described the 9/11 attacks as “some people did something.”

Omar’s tweet suggested that there is a deeper reason as to why Cooperman would back Bloomberg for president.

Critics slammed Omar for what they saw as an insinuation that Cooperman would support Bloomberg in 2020 because they’re both Jewish.

Her supporters and allies, on the other hand, defended Omar, saying that it’s not a jab at their Jewish faith but their status as billionaires. They also accused critics of honing in on the wrong facts.

Still wrong: Omar’s critics pushed back against her defenders’ arguments.

Tennis star Martina Navratilova weighed in on Omar’s remarks as well.
